I'm a 2D animator: to integrate 2D and 3d animation with the Toonz
3D Export plug-in, do I need to learn 3D animation techniques as
well?
No, Toonz 3D Export allows 2D animators to work together with 3D
animators, leaving them the freedom to work exclusively in the field
they are master of.
After the scene is planned, 2D animators will create 2D characters
and objects, while 3D animators will contribute with 3D animations
and, thanks to the plug-in, with an xsheet file containing information
about the position in the 3D scene of the selected objects.
When the moment to integrate 2D and 3D comes, 2D animators will
edit in Toonz Xsheet the exported scene, adding 2D animations and
rendered 3D images.
How will the integration of 2D and 3D animation affect the work-flow
of my 2D department?
The production of 2D animations will follow the usual work-flow:
scanning, processing and painting the animated levels.
As far as the integration with 3D animation is concerned, once the
xsheet is exported from Softimage|3D or Softimage|XSI, and 3D contributions
are rendered out, all the remaining work is 2D compositing, to be
done in the familiar Xsheet interface with the usual tools you're
accustomed to.

How
complex is it to place 2D levels in the right position once the
xsheet file is exported?
The exported xsheet file is a completely empty xsheet, except for
some pegbars information about the N/S, E/W position and Field value.
After you load levels in the scene, all you have to do is to assign
the right pegbar to the right level, and the level will be "placed"
automatically in the 3D environment. In addition, for easy reference,
the pegbar in Xsheet will be labelled with the name of the object
selected in the 3D environment.
